Job Description:

The Senior Staff Accountant under the supervision of the Accounting Manager manages all daily accounting operations to include (a) the production of monthly financial statements and reports, (b) maintenance of an adequate accounting information system including general ledger functions, accounts payable functions, asset accounting and financial reporting, and (c) a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, and (d) ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.

Ensures financial records are maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and in compliance with state, federal and all applicable regulatory bodies

  • Assists in the preparation monthly financial statements for the VP of Accounting
  • Prepares and posts month-end journal entries
  • Compiles and analyzes financial information, prepares and makes entries into general ledger accounts and completes daily accounting operations through effective use of automated accounting information systems including accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll functions
  • Analyzes balance sheet information including assets, liabilities and capital accounts. Prepares balance sheet, profit and loss statement, and other financial reports to summarize and interpret current and projected company financial position
  • Responsible for the overall management of balance sheet and income statement accounts as well as the preparation of accurate journal entries for the monthly general ledger closing cycle
  • Gathers and reports key statistics and variances through the effective utilization of information systems
  • Prepares and supervises the preparation of month-end balance sheet account reconciliations and clears any outstanding reconciling items
  • Maintains an orderly chart of accounts

Protects the assets of the organization through effective internal controls, internal auditing, and direct supervision of accounting operations

  • Manages and controls cash disbursements through an effective accounts payable system
  • Assists the VP of Accounting in the preparation of the annual Medicare cost report
  • Prepares all requested documentation for annual internal and external audits.
  • Maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
  • Ensures that all reasonable discounts are taken on accounts payable
  • Ensures that accounts receivables are collected promptly, properly valued and reserved for
  • Provides for a system of management cost reports
  • Monitors and investigates positive pay exceptions; takes action as appropriate
  • Researches and corrects any unusual transactions immediately to ensure JourneyCare does not incur a loss as a result of unauthorized transactions or other errors

Responsible for identifying and recommending solutions to modify processes or systems related to financial reporting

  • Works toward continually improving the organization’s internal controls
  • Continually maintains and enhances knowledge of automated systems including the donor database and the accounting system. Leverages knowledge to improve efficiency and effectiveness of processes
  • Continually maintains and enhances knowledge of nonprofit, health care and hospice policies, procedures, best practices and regulations
  • Identifies issues as they relate to process improvement and customer satisfaction; analyzes root cause of the issue and makes recommendations for improvements
  • Maintains ongoing involvement with system improvements
  • Serves as a resource to finance staff and other internal departments as necessary
  • Assists in other Finance requirements on an ongoing basis as needed to ensure deadlines are met and team members are supported (i.e. capital lease analysis, special events, etc.)

Responsible for project management

  • Assists in other areas of the department as needed and maintains efficient training and knowledge of all area of the finance department, including payroll, accounts receivable and accounts payable
  • Assists in preparation of the annual budget
  • Manages department policies and procedures in accordance with all agency, state and federal guidelines
  • Assists in completion of cost reports, insurance policies, and annual audit

Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelors’ degree in Accounting or relevant work experience
  • CPA preferred
  • 5-7 years’ Experience in not-for profit/health care accounting management preferably in hospice care operations
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and direct professional and administrative personnel
  • Information systems experience and knowledge required
  • Experience with corporate business management, and governmental regulations
  • Advanced level experience with spreadsheet and word processing required
  • Experience with personal computers and database applications and Microsoft office software
  • Accounting software package experience required
  • Ability to demonstrate exceptional theoretical and practical knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, auditing standards and best practices
  • Ability to solve complex problems
  • Ability to think creatively and develop recommendations to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of processes
  • Ability to work effectively with Management, auditors and examiners, consultants, staff, volunteers, patients and families and the general public
  • Ability to be flexible and effectively manage priorities and multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Ability to maintain organizational confidentiality which includes, but is not limited to, information about patients/families, volunteers, employees, donors and agency processes
  • Ability to communicate in an active office environment
  • Ability to efficiently operate all job-related office equipment (telephone, computer, calculator, fax, copier)
