Job Description:

The Pediatric Registered Nurse assesses patients and their needs.  They make appropriate suggestions regarding pain and symptom management in order to ensure comfort and quality of life.  The Pediatric Registered Nurse educates and supports patients and families regarding expectations during the end-of-life process and is responsible for reporting any symptom calls and interventions to the primary nurse.

This Pediatric Registered Nurse will cover: Barrington, Waukegan/Rockford and other areas in the North Pediatric Region that they may be called out to do visitis in.

Weekdays: 5pm to Midnight or Midnight to 8am shift.

Weekends: 8 hour or 12 hour on-call shifts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

Provides patient care visits for admission, assessment and pain and symptom management and support during the dying process.

Answers incoming symptom calls from patients their families and caregivers.

Educates current and prospective patients and families regarding hospice and the end of life.

Documents patient visits and phone calls in an accurate and timely manner.

Completes orders of new medication and supplies for patients.

Updates the patient’s physician and/or medical director regarding any changes in status.

Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team appropriately.

Assesses family and caregiver ability to provide safe care, carry out care plan and educate on the proper functioning of all equipment.

Enhances self knowledge regarding new medical and hospice information.

Other duties may be assigned or required for the performance of this position.


Experience and Skills:

  • Associates degree in nursing
  • Training in hospice and palliative care and pain and symptom management is perferred 
  • Registered nurse licensed in the state of Illinois
  • Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse is preferred
  • 3 - 5 years of experience as a registered nurse in the hospice and palliaive care  setting si required 
  • Must have excellent experience working with critical care pediatirc patients 
  • Must be willing to travel within area of NW communities
