Job Description:

The Director of Communications is responsible for developing clear and consistent communications to educate, engage, inform and inspire JourneyCare’s internal and external audiences. This role will focus on creating strategic content through developing an editorial brand journalism/content calendar to drive staff engagement, culture, and growth through use of multi-channel communication vehicles and publications. Under the direction of the Vice President of Marketing and Communications, proactively develop pitch strategies that secure thought-leadership media placements by positioning JourneyCare’s approved brand messages, patient stories, leadership, and advocacy with local, regional, and national media outlets and associations (e.g. AMA, ILHPCO, NPHCO) to support its vision and business objectives. Additionally, must be able to serve in the role as the agency’s back-up media spokesperson and crisis communications lead, as necessary.

The Director of Communications will be located in our Glenview, Illinois office.

  • Proactively pitch and secure media placements
  • Drives and maintains an editorial calendar through the strategic use of brand journalism and content engagement for all publications and uses across the integrated communication channels
  • Develops distribution strategies to grow reach, impact, and metrics for the agency
  • Collaborates with the Vice President Marketing and Communications to create communication hierarchy through the development of an organizational rhythm and alignment that ensures efficiency and effectiveness of messaging "stickiness" (e.g. goals, advocacy, engagement)
  • Manages content for intranet and website, as necessary
  • Ability to strategically concept messaging on behalf of the organization and senior leadership, as necessary.
  • Manages and monitors media cycle, advocacy, and news on behalf of JourneyCare
  • Coordinates processes for various communications deliverables and strategic publications
  • Consults with interdepartmental stakeholders to create effective communications, collateral and reports
  • Collaborates with Human Resources, Marketing team members and other team members, as required, to drive culture and reward/recognition programs
  • Identify appropriate indicators that measure success of established communication strategies. Collect, analyze and report metrics to identify best practices to guide future strategies
  • Collaborates with digital and marketing team to create consistent internal and external messaging, including interactive platforms (patient portal, intranet, and social media)
  • Other duties as assigned or required for the performance of this position

Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing communications, journalism or related field
  • Seven years plus of communications experience in media relations, public relations, and social engagement platforms for internal and external audiences, journalism and/or integrated marketing communications
  • Previous direct leadership role, minimum 2years, managing teams
  • Proven media contacts and metrics driven/results-oriented placements
  • Strong writing and verbal communications skills
  • Strong presentation and media training skills
  • Excellent planning, project management and organizational skills
  • Self- motivated and results oriented
  • Strong listening skills and proven ability to assess and prioritize communications issues
  • Abreast and savvy of innovative media/social communication platforms
  • Spokesperson and crisis management experience
  • Understanding of technology used within communications for connecting remote staff and multiple locations
  • Proven ability to work with cross-functional teams
  • Basic photography and video skills
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Office: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite software, Go To Meeting, Podcasts or other communications software
